This year’s Tamil Isai Kavalar Dr. Rajah Sir Muthiah Chettiar Birth Anniversary Commemoration Award was presented to Rm. Periyakaruppan (Tamizhannal) for his contribution to the growth of Tamil literature. The award was distributed at a function held at Raja Muthiah Mandram (Madurai) to commemorate the 104th birth anniversary of Raja Sir Muthiah Chettiar of Chettinad here on Tuesday(05/08/ 2008).

Tamizhannal is the 24th recipient of the award, instituted in 1984 to honour scholars. The award carries a purse of Rs.25,000 and a citation. Conferring the award on Dr. Periyakaruppan, R. Karpaga Kumaravel, Vice-Chancellor of Madurai Kamaraj University, eulogised Sir Muthiah Chettiar and his service to education and the development of Tamil language.
Pointing that he was an alumnus of Annamalai University, the Vice-Chancellor recollected the services rendered by the Raja’s family, especially in making education accessible to all. He also said that members of the Raja’s family were philanthropists and educationists. Lauding the services rendered by the Tamizhannal to Tamil, the Vice-Chancellor said that the university was ready to use the scholar’s knowledge, experience, expertise and services in favour of the present students of the university. He also urged Tamil professor R. Mohan to write a biography of Tamizhannal that could be published through the publication wing of the university.
Tamizhannal, who started his career as a school teacher in Karaikudi, has authored more than 60 books under various titles such as classical Tamil, traditional grammar, functional grammar and folklore.
He has guided more than 50 students in their doctoral research.
R. Chokkalingam, president, Kaviarasu Kannadasan Narpani Mandram, delivered the Raja Sir Muthiah Chettiar birthday commemoration lecture.
